Unlike fear, anxiety can occur without an identifiable trigger, making it harder to understand and explain. Mild anxiety is vague and unsettling, while severe anxiety can be extremely debilitating, having a serious impact on daily life.
Anxiety is considered a problem when it starts to affect how you feel and behave, manifesting in physical symptoms which interfere with your ability to sleep or otherwise function.
The physical effects of anxiety may include:
• Heart palpitations/muscle weakness/fatigue
• Tension, tension headaches
• Nausea, chest pain, shortness of breath
• Trouble concentrating/restlessness
• Feeling tense or jumpy, anticipating the worst
Panic attacks are a common symptom of anxiety and can start with no warning and be incredibly frightening. Although the fear that causes the anxiety is generally irrational, the subjective perception of danger is very real for the individual. Phobias and obsessive compulsions can also develop from anxiety.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is the most effective model of counselling when dealing with anxiety disorders, panic attacks, trauma, compulsive disorders and stress. This approach helps clients to alleviate the symptoms which are causing them to feel anxious or low. Every CBT therapist at Nightingale is qualified to Diploma level in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy from the University of Dundee. As well as CBT therapy, our counsellors are highly trained in a wide range of therapy models, enabling every client to recover and regain control, with a treatment plan suited to your needs. In some cases we will refer clients to our Counselling Psychologist.
Coping with anxiety can be a lonely and isolating experience. At Nightingale, our counsellors can help you develop your own coping mechanisms in order to deal with anxiety and offer strategies to overcome negative thinking patterns.

"I was introduced to one of Nightingale’s CBT counsellors. My constant anxious state had lead to many physical problems, including chronic fatigue. I really enjoyed working with her and after every session I would leave feeling energised, inspired and positive. She provides you with the tools to help you address your concerns. Her compassionate and non-judgemental approach coupled with her great sense of humour makes her a fantastic teacher. I learnt so much from her in such a short space of time and I can honestly say that after one session, I had begun to think differently about my situation. "If you are flexible in your thinking, no problem is insurmountable". I will never forget this gem, amongst many others within Nightingale. She is so 'on it' and smart, but in a very unassuming way. I looked forward to every session and I cannot recommend her highly enough."
