Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a well-known anxiety disorder, affecting around 1-2% of the population. Most people with OCD tend to follow a set pattern of thought and behaviour.
Following the pattern of compulsive behaviour will reduce the feelings of anxiety and distress for a short time, but the behaviour needs to be repeated consistently to continue to temporarily relieve the anxiety and stress. For example, checking your windows and doors three times will happen every time you leave your home.
The condition can range from mild to chronic, affecting more aspects of daily life as it becomes more severe. Some symptoms of the condition include:

The obsession provokes a feeling of intense anxiety and distress.
The compulsive behaviour brings temporary relief from anxiety, but the obsession and anxiety soon return, causing the pattern or cycle to begin again.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is the most effective model of counselling when dealing with compulsive disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, panic attacks and stress. This approach helps clients to alleviate the symptoms which are causing them to feel anxious or low. Every CBT therapist at Nightingale is qualified to Diploma level in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy from the University of Dundee. As well as CBT therapy, our counsellors are highly trained in a wide range of therapy models, enabling every client to recover and regain control, with a treatment plan suited to your needs. In some cases we will refer clients to our Counselling Psychologist.
