Fear is a part of everyday life. We all feel uncomfortable in certain situations and that fear is part of human nature. Phobias, however, are much more pronounced than fears. A phobia is an overwhelming and debilitating fear of an object, place, situation, animal or travel.
They develop when a person has an exaggerated or unrealistic sense of danger about a situation or object. If a phobia becomes very severe, that person may organise their life avoiding the situation causing them anxiety. As well as restricting their day to day life, it can also cause considerable anguish.
Symptoms may include:
• Unsteadiness, dizziness and light-headedness
• Increased heart rate or palpitations
• Shortness of breath
• Trembling or shaking
If you don’t come into contact with the source of your phobia very often, it may not affect your everyday life. However, if you have a complex phobia such as agoraphobia, or flying, leading a normal life may be difficult.
A phobia is a common type of anxiety disorder. Cognitive behavioural therapy is the model of counselling most effective in anxiety disorders, panic attacks, stress compulsive disorders, phobias and trauma. This approach helps clients to alleviate the symptoms which are causing them to feel anxious or low. Every CBT therapist at Nightingale is qualified to Diploma level in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy from the University of Dundee. As well as CBT therapy, our counsellors are highly trained in a wide range of therapy models, enabling every client to recover and regain control, with a treatment plan suited to your needs. In some cases we will refer clients to our Counselling Psychologist.
Nightingale will help you understand the condition and find a way forward, with a treatment programme designed specifically to suit your needs. With the correct diagnosis and treatment, we can help you manage your condition and improve your quality of life.
We aim to ensure that every client feels safe in the knowledge that they have found a professional organisation that understands the challenges and concerns they face when they decide to seek assistance. "I found Florence to be extremely practical, down to earth and helpful in the homework and reading material she set out. It is very important to me that I can relate to a counsellor and feel at ease and not overawed. I think a relationship of respect and trust has to be built up for there to be any progress. I found all of these qualities were met in my time with Florence plus a lot of laughter!!!!!. I have recommended Florence and Nightingale Counselling to many friends, family and colleagues and feel content knowing that she is only a phone call way."
